Wellness
True to our original founding vision and mission, Vida Charter School believes that it is our responsibility to support our students' social, emotional, and physical wellness in a holistic approach.
Social and emotional wellness is supported through our schoolwide Responsive Classroom design, in which all teachers and staff implement routines and structures that build safe, welcoming classroom communities from the outset of the school year. All students’ school day begins with a Morning Meeting, and ends with a Closing Circle. Students are guided and encouraged to be inclusive and respectful to others, and to solve conflicts as needed to repair relationships and restore safe learning spaces.
Our School Counselor also works closely with teachers and staff, and directly with individual students and families to help in situations where there is a higher level of need for social, emotional and behavioral support. Any family who is interested in speaking with our school counselor is welcome to call the school office to schedule an appointment.
Vida Charter School recognizes that wellness and proper nutrition are related to all students’ physical well-being, growth, development, and readiness to learn. The school is committed to providing an environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience.
All students have a minimum of 30 minutes of daily recess, with an additional morning recess during breakfast. All students receive Health and Physical Education for 40 minutes twice per six day cycle. Additional opportunities for movement are included periodically during classroom instruction as “brain breaks” or energizers.
Additionally, Vida’s wellness policy ensures that we do not serve sugary snacks or sweets, which includes special classroom celebrations or holidays. As such, families who wish to share a treat with their child’s class may reference our Family Handbook for a list of acceptable healthy snacks.
